Nanny’s Baked Sweet Onions

Nanny’s Baked Sweet Onions come from my beloved mother-in-law Nancy, who is now in heaven. We make these on holidays or special occasions, and they are always a welcome dish with not a leftover to be had. They are perfect alongside a marvelous prime rib, grilled steak, ham and of course turkey.

I hope this recipe becomes a tradition in your family.

Ingredients

  • 6 large Vidalia or sweet onions, peeled and cut in half

  • 6 beef bullion cubes, divided

  • 4 Tbsp. unsalted butter, divided

  • 3 Tbsp. brown sugar, divided

  • 1 Tbsp. Worchestershire sauce

  • Black pepper to taste

  • Vegetable oil baking spray

Directions

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Spray a large Pyrex dish (15 by 10 inches) with vegetable oil spray such as Pam. Set aside
  • Carefully scoop out the center of the halved and peeled onions with a teaspoon so that a teaspoon-size hole is open inside of the onion. Place in prepared baking dish.
  • Fill each hole with a tsp. of butter and half of each bullion cube.
  • Sprinkle brown sugar into each onion hole.
  • Drizzle onion halves with Worchestershire sauce. Sprinkle each with black pepper to taste.
  • Cover baking dish with aluminum foil. Bake for 30-50 minutes until onions are fork tender. Check at 30 minutes. Roasting time may vary based on the size of the onions. Serve with your favorite roast turkey, chicken, ham, pork or beef.
